10 Best Hanging Pendant Lights for Kitchen Islands UK

Kitchen island pendant lights are probably the most scrutinised lighting decision in any home renovation. Everything else — the taps, the handles, the tiles — tends to get chosen because it's part of a broader scheme. Pendant lights are different: they hang in mid-air, they're always visible, and they have to work as functional task lighting and as a design statement at the same time.

These ten are our most popular, our most photographed and the ones customers come back to order a second or third of once they've seen them hanging in their kitchens. We've included everything from clear ribbed glass that sparkles in daylight to smoked glass that creates atmosphere in the evening — there's a version here for every kitchen, whether it's a bright open-plan space or something moodier and more enclosed.

The golden rule: most people need two or three. A single pendant over an island rarely looks intentional. Two creates balance; three creates rhythm and proper light coverage. If you're not sure how many you need, the spacing guide further down the page will help you work it out in under a minute.

Before You Buy: The Key Numbers

  • Hang pendants 30–36 inches (75–90cm) above the island surface — add 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling height above 8ft
  • Space pendants 60–75cm apart (centre to centre) along the length of the island
  • Leave at least 30cm clearance between the outer edge of the island and the outermost pendant
  • For islands up to 120cm, two pendants will look cleaner than three
  • For islands 150cm and over, three pendants gives better coverage and visual balance
  • All pendants take a standard E27 bulb — a warm filament LED at 2200–2700K is the one to use
  • Check that your ceiling rose or junction box is positioned centrally above the island before you buy

The 10 Best Kitchen Island Pendant Lights for UK Homes

All chosen because they look as good in a row of three as they do alone — and because real customers keep coming back for more.

No. 01

The Spire — Conical Ribbed Glass Pendant

Three Spire conical ribbed glass pendant lights in a row over a kitchen island — clear ribbed glass with antique brass fitting, focused downward light pool
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The Spire is the one you keep seeing in kitchen renovation photos and wondering what it is. The tapered conical form does something specific and useful: it sends a tight, concentrated pool of light directly downward onto the worktop, which makes it genuinely excellent as task lighting — not just something pretty to look at. Three in a row over an island creates that satisfying visual rhythm you see in high-end kitchen design, but without any of the price tag that usually comes with it.

The clear ribbed glass behaves differently throughout the day. In the morning, the vertical ribs catch natural light and scatter it softly. By evening, with a warm filament bulb inside, the whole fitting glows rather than just illuminating — it's a distinction worth noticing. Available in antique bronze or antique brass: the brass leans warmer and slightly more refined; the bronze goes slightly darker and more industrial. Both work. Handmade in India, which means no two are identical.

No. 02

The Dome — Ribbed Glass Dome Pendant

Two Dome ribbed glass pendant lights hanging over a kitchen island — wide shallow dome form in clear ribbed glass with antique brass fitting
Replace with 2nd image from product page

Where the Spire focuses light like a spotlight, the Dome spreads it. The wide, shallow bowl shape casts light downward and outward in a generous warm pool — ideal for a kitchen island that doubles as a dining or socialising space, where you want the whole surface lit rather than a concentrated centre point. The brim also makes the Dome one of our most visually satisfying fittings: even switched off, the dome shape reads as a considered architectural feature. It earns its place in the room without being switched on.

The ribbed glass does the same light-scattering thing you see across the range — those vertical lines animate the walls and ceiling around it when the bulb is lit. Available in antique bronze or antique brass, and also in a larger size if you want to make a proper statement with two rather than three. The larger version hung in a pair over a long island is one of our most-photographed customer setups.

The Flute — Ribbed Glass Teardrop Pendant

Three Flute ribbed glass teardrop pendants at staggered heights over a kitchen island — antique brass fitting with twisted black fabric flex
Replace with 2nd image from product page

Ribbed glass is having its moment — but the Flute does something most ribbed pendants don't. Rather than a cylinder or dome, the glass is shaped into a teardrop that tapers gracefully to a point at the bottom. That form gives it an elegance that more geometric glass pendants lack: it looks expensive without announcing itself, and it photographs beautifully from every angle, which matters if your kitchen appears in Instagram posts or estate agent photos.

The combination of antique brass fittings and twisted black fabric flex is one of those pairings that just works — the warmth of the brass against the dark flex stops either element from being too much. This is the pendant we'd choose for a kitchen that already has personality: aged brass taps, open shelving, a butler's sink. It won't compete. Hang three at slightly different heights over a long island and it looks considered and editorial without appearing to have tried.

The Opal Clear — Ribbed Oval Glass Pendant

Opal Clear ribbed oval glass pendant lights over a kitchen island — clear ribbed glass with antique brass fitting and black twisted flex, all-direction light
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The Opal Clear is the one we point people to when they want something that works hard in a kitchen without dominating it. The oval silhouette is softer than a cylinder and less angular than a cone — it reads well in both modern and more traditional kitchen schemes, which makes it one of our most versatile pendants. The clear ribbed glass catches and refracts light in every direction rather than just downward, so the whole island surface gets illuminated rather than a single spotlight in the centre.

The antique brass detailing and twisted black fabric flex add warmth without making it feel vintage or precious. It's one of the most-photographed pendants in our range — customers send pictures of their kitchen setups and this one comes up more than almost any other. Also available in white glass as the Opal if you want a softer, more diffused glow. The clear version is the one to choose if light output matters as much as character.

The Sylvie Smoked — Smoked Glass Pendant

Three Sylvie smoked glass pendant lights over a kitchen island — antique silver fitting with black fabric cable, warm atmospheric glow through dark glass
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The Sylvie Smoked is for kitchens that lean into atmosphere. Smoked glass with antique silver metal fittings and a black fabric cable — everything about it is working in the same direction: depth, warmth, a slight moodiness that changes the feeling of a room rather than just adding light to it. Where a clear glass pendant lets light pass through freely, the smoked glass filters and softens it, casting a warmer and more intimate glow that suits evening kitchens beautifully.

It's the version to choose when you want atmosphere over brightness — when the kitchen is the kind of place where people linger after dinner rather than the kind where the overhead lights stay on until 10pm. It works well in kitchens with deep greens, navy, charcoal or dark wood tones, but is equally effective as a contrast piece in a lighter room where you want to introduce some shadow and depth. Grouped in a row over an island, the smoked glass creates a visual rhythm that feels deliberately editorial. Also available in clear glass as the Sylvie Clear if you want the same refined silhouette with more light output.

The Clara — Glass Cloche Pendant

Clara glass cloche pendant lights over a kitchen island — rounded bell cloche form in clear glass, elegant and sculptural hanging light
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The cloche form — that rounded, bell-like silhouette — is one of the most enduring shapes in pendant lighting, and the Clara is our take on it done properly. The glass sits clean and sculptural, the kind of fitting that reads as a complete object rather than just a light shade. It has presence when it's switched off and warmth when it's on, which is the combination you're looking for when choosing something that hangs permanently in the middle of your kitchen.

This is the pendant for people who want something that feels a little more special than the standard ribbed cylinder without going full statement piece. It's approachable and elegant in equal measure — the sort of light that works in a classic cream Shaker kitchen just as well as it would in a more contemporary all-white space. Hang two over a compact island for a balanced, symmetrical look, or three over a longer run for rhythm. Either way, the cloche shape reads beautifully in a row.

No. 07

The Bell — Clear Glass Industrial Pendant

Three Bell clear glass pendant lights grouped over a kitchen island at staggered heights — clean cylindrical form with industrial antique bronze fitting, warm filament bulb visible
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The Bell is the one for people tired of fussiness. No ribbing, no texture, no decoration — just beautifully clear glass in a clean cylindrical form with an industrial-style metal fitting that does all the design work. There's a quiet confidence to a pendant this simple: it doesn't compete with anything around it. If you've spent a lot of time and money on your kitchen, the Bell is the pendant that shows it off rather than fighting for attention.

Because the glass is completely clear, the bulb is fully visible — which makes a warm filament LED non-negotiable rather than optional. The combination of a glowing filament bulb and an industrial fitting (available in antique bronze or antique brass) is one of the most consistently popular looks in kitchen design, and it holds up because it actually works: warm, flattering, practical. Group three at slightly different heights over a long island and it looks deliberately casual — the kind of kitchen that feels lived-in and confident rather than showroom-perfect. Handmade in India.

No. 08

The Drift — Clear Ripple Glass Pendant

Drift clear ripple glass pendant lights in a pair over a kitchen island — flowing handmade ripple texture with brushed silver fitting, dancing light patterns
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The Drift looks different every time you walk past it — and that's not an exaggeration or a marketing line. The handmade clear glass is shaped with a flowing ripple texture that refracts light in constantly shifting patterns. In the morning, it catches daylight and moves it. Come evening, with a warm bulb inside, it glitters. It's the kind of pendant that earns compliments from people who walk into your kitchen for the first time and immediately say "where did you get that?"

The brushed silver fitting is a deliberate departure from the antique brass and bronze across the rest of the range — it gives the Drift a slightly cooler, more contemporary edge that works particularly well in kitchens with chrome or stainless details. The generous drop makes it natural for rooms with real ceiling height where a shorter pendant would look proportionally lost. Each piece is handmade, so slight variations between your two or three pendants add to the character rather than being a problem. Pair two side by side over the island and the ripple effect in tandem is quietly magical.

The Crest Gold — Wire Cage Pendant in French Gold

Crest Gold wire cage pendant lights in three over a kitchen island — French gold open cage frame with warm filament LED, geometric shadow pattern on ceiling
Replace with 2nd image from product page

The Crest Gold takes a wire cage — a design that's been done to death in industrial interiors — and makes it feel genuinely luxurious by finishing it in French gold. The result sits in its own category: warmer and more decorative than a standard cage pendant, but with the same openness and lightness that makes cage designs work so well in kitchens where you don't want a solid shade blocking the visual field.

When lit with a warm filament LED, the open cage casts gorgeous geometric shadow patterns across the ceiling and surrounding walls — the kind of light effect that makes a kitchen feel like a place rather than just a room. Grouped in three at staggered heights over a long island, the layered gold creates something that feels considered and editorial without being expensive to achieve. If your kitchen uses brass hardware, warm wood tones or organic textural materials, this pendant will feel like it was always meant to be there. Also available in matt black as the Crest if you prefer a cooler, more industrial version.

No. 10

The Shard — Handcut Diamond Glass Pendant

Two Shard handcut diamond glass pendant lights over a kitchen island — wide clear glass dome with all-over handcut diamond pattern, antique brass fitting, geometric light scatter across ceiling
Replace with 2nd image from product page

If you want one pendant that stops people in their tracks and makes them ask where it came from, this is it. The Shard is a wide clear glass dome with an all-over diamond pattern — every single facet individually handcut in India. When light passes through it in the evening, geometric patterns scatter across every wall and ceiling surface in the room. Not a subtle light effect. Not a texture that takes a moment to notice. This is the kind of thing people walk into your kitchen and immediately comment on.

By day it's architectural and beautiful — the handcut glass catches natural light and throws tiny prisms across whatever surfaces face it. By evening, with a warm bulb inside, it becomes genuinely spectacular. Two of these hung in a pair over a large island is one of the most impressive kitchen lighting setups we know of — the kind that ends up in photographs and gets used as a reference point by other people planning their own kitchens. The antique brass fitting is warm and considered without competing with the glass. The 173cm drop makes it best suited to rooms with real ceiling height. Also available as the Shard Slim for a more vertical, elongated version of the same handcut quality.

How Many Pendant Lights Do You Actually Need?

This is the question we get most. The short answer is almost always two or three — one pendant over an island rarely looks deliberate, and anything beyond three starts to feel crowded. Two creates balance; three creates rhythm and proper light coverage across a longer worktop.

Island Length Pendants Spacing (centre to centre)
Up to 100cm 2 pendants ~50cm apart
100–150cm 2 pendants 60–70cm apart
150–200cm 2–3 pendants 60–75cm apart
200cm+ 3 pendants 70–80cm apart

A practical check: divide your island length by the number of pendants you're planning, and make sure each pendant has about 30cm of breathing room from the end of the island surface. For most UK kitchens — which tend to have islands in the 100–160cm range — two pendants is usually the cleaner answer. For a large open-plan kitchen with a 200cm+ island, three gives you the visual weight and coverage the space needs.

Not sure? Email us at support@thebonniehome.co.uk with your island measurements and we'll help you plan the layout. It's a two-minute conversation that's worth having before you commit.
